Finland , officially the Republic of Finland (in Finnish: Suomi) is a member country of the European Union since 1995 and located in the northeast of Europe. It has borders to the west with Sweden, to the east with Russia and to the north with Norway. To the west and south it is surrounded by the Baltic Sea, which separates it from Sweden and Estonia, crossing the Gulfs of Bothnia and Finland, respectively. The capital and most important city of the country is Helsinki.
Most Finns speak Finnish (or Finnish) as their mother tongue, which is one of the few official languages of the European Union not descended from the Indo-European family. The second official language of Finland is Swedish, spoken as a mother tongue by 5.6% of the population.
Finland was part of Sweden until it was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1809, becoming the Grand Duchy of Finland (an autonomous entity of Russia until 1917, when it gained independence).
Although one third of Finland is located north of the Arctic Circle, the Gulf Stream maintains a relatively mild climate compared to other countries at the same latitude. The average maximum temperature in Helsinki is + 25 ° C in July and -3.6 ° C in February. In the south the snow remains from December to March and in the north from October to April. Annual rainfall in the southern part of the country is more than 700 millimeters, a third of it in the form of snow. In the north the precipitations are respectively 600 millimeters of which half appears in the form of snow.
